Human T-Cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 1 (HTLV-I) HTLV-1 belongs to a family of retroviruses that infects T-lymphocytes to cause a range of disorders. Infection is usually asymptomatic in the beginning and typically manifests later in life to cause fatal leukemia, debilitative myelopathy, uveitis, infectious dermatitis, or other inflammatory disorders. HTLV-1 can be transmitted via breast milk, sexual contact, and intravenous drug use. Serological assays such as ELISA and PCR for HTLV are widely used in routine screening of blood donors. It is a bacterium that infects the urethra, cervix and anus and most infections are asymptomatic. In men, it is the second most common cause of nongonococcal urethritis and in women, M. genitalium is commonly found in association with bacterial vaginosis, cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease. An FDA approved assay for M. genitalium is not yet available so diagnosis is usually is made in patient with persist symptoms who test negative for chlamydia and gonorrhea.
