Trichomonas vaginalis T. vaginalis is an anaerobic, flagellated protozoan parasite and the most common curable STD. Approximately 70% of women and 30% of men with T. vaginalis do not exhibit symptoms so diagnosis based on clinical symptoms alone is unreliable. Although traditional methods such as direct microscopic observation (wet mount) of vaginal secretions are still used, newer methods, such as rapid antigen testing and transcription-mediated amplification, have demonstrated much greater sensitivity.
