Rhinovirus The most common viral infectious agent in humans and is the predominant cause of the common cold. There are 99 recognized types of human rhinoviruses that differ according to their surface proteins. There are no vaccines against these viruses as there is a lack of cross-protection between serotypes. Most people recover within one week and infection is rarely serious.
