Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) PAI-1 is the principal inhibitor of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase Plasminogen Activator (uPA), the activators of plasminogen and fibrinolysis. Increased PAI-1 levels may predispose patients to the formation of atherosclerosis plaques. Clinical evidence suggests that increased PAI-1 levels are associated with atherothrombosis and elevated plasma PAI-1 levels have been identified as a predictor of myocardial infarction.
