Drug Testing Reagents for Commercial Assay Development

Immunoassays for drug-testing are generally divided into forensic (DOA assays) and clinical products (TDM serum assays). Due to the differences in applications there are distinct design, technical capabilities and regulatory approval processes for each type. Meridian offers a range of drug testing reagents designed to produce accurate and precise results for both qualitative and quantitative assays.

About drug testing

Drug abuse testing traditionally refers to the practice of testing for drugs including depressants, hallucinogens, CNS stimulants, opiates, cannabinoids, and phencyclidine (PCP). These tests have expanded in recent years to include (1) workplace, military and school testing for drugs of abuse (DOA), (2) screening in sports for the use of performance enhancing compounds, and (3) the emergency-room in order to diagnose possible overdose situations. In all of these areas, the testing method is qualitative only and is typically dependent on a urine or saliva sample as the testing specimen. Specifically, these types of assays are designed to determine if an individual is or is not taking DOA or non-prescribed medications.

Another use of drug testing is to monitor drug pharmacokinetics in order to help physicians provide the best treatment to their patients. With most medications, a certain dosage level of the drug (the therapeutic range) is required to obtain the desired effect. The goal of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is to optimize the dose and clinical outcome for each patient. Some key differences in the TDM testing method compared to DOA are (1) the diagnostic specimen is typically serum instead of urine, saliva or hair, (2) the results are quantitative and need to be accurate and precise over a large concentration range, and (3) the tests are designed for use in hospital laboratories as opposed to rapid point-of-care.
