Vitamin D is a fat-soluble precursor of the steroid hormone calcitriol that is essential for bone health and mineral metabolism. Screening for deficiencies in Vitamin D is recommended for high risk groups such as patients with osteoporosis, rickets/osteomalacia, chronic kidney disease or malabsorption syndrome.

About Vitamin D To become biologically active Vitamin D is modified to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25 OH Vitamin D3 or Calcidiol) and 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (D2 or Calcitriol). Serum concentrations of both forms are routinely used in clinical practice to assess vitamin D status. However, in the circulation, vitamin D is bound tightly to a special carrier, vitamin D-binding protein (DBP) or to a lesser extent, albumin or other blood proteins. To distinguish between bound vitamin D and free, biologically active vitamin D, vitamin D must first be released from the carrier proteins. Vitamin D, either in its D2 or D3 form, is essential for normal human development, kidney function and bone health. Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to cancer development and some autoimmune diseases. Given this huge impact of vitamin D on human health, it is important for laboratory pathologists and clinicians to have reliable tools to determine a patient’s vitamin D status.
