Quenchers which are commonly used in association with fluorescent dyes in molecular assays, are substances capable of quenching the fluorescence emitted by the fluorescent dye. Normally, for optimal performance, the quencher should be carefully selected or matched to the reporter dye emission spectrum as closely as possible. Some of these quenchers and fluorescent dyes on the market are patented and licences are required to use them in commercial assays, affecting not only affordability of such oligonucleotides but also the profitability of the commercial assay itself.
